The current strategy for NG flap is basically a combination of the NG 3lap and NU flap strats, where the driving strategies from the NG 3lap are used, and the shroomspots from the NU flap are used.
The current strategy for NG flap is to drive 1 lap normally. It uses the same general driving strategies as the NG 3lap, however uses 2 additional mushrooms to pass through two sections locked at 100 IV, where they are normally locked at 73 IV. The first of these sections is the shroomless shortcut at the beginning, as is done in the NU 3lap and flap, however you land back on the bridge. The second of these sections is the last half of the cave, where you can use a mushroom on the first green mushroom of the right path, and take that boost to a red mushroom, which gives you a 100 IV lock and a trick exiting the cave.

Flap 2.541 25.998 30.073

Mushroom Gorge has a 3lap viable ultra shortcut, and currently benefits from multiple uses of wall riding and superhopping in both 3lap and flap categories. Hence, it has three 3lap and three flap categories.

Unrestricted 3lap

The current strategy for UR 3lap is to perform the ultra shortcut. The idea is to bounce off the mushroom at the beginning of the track, then wall ride on the mountain wall to the left of the finish line. If you do this correctly, you will perform the ultra shortcut 3 times in quick succession. The best way to go about this is to use a property of mushrooms where if you hop on the frame you bounce then commit to a direction, instead of the rotation lasting a fixed amount of time, it will continue indefinitely. Additionally, you can adjust the rate at which you rotate by changing your pitch. So, the first mushroom is used to accelerate from the start, which saves a good amount over the start boost (both in the boosts' lengths and acceleration rates) Then you turn and brake, so you can turn around faster. Once turned around, you hop off the very edge of the track, use the second mushroom mid-air, and hop on the frame you bounce off the mushroom. Since you used the third mushroom before bouncing, you are now locked at 100 IV and will be able to wall ride. By changing vertical inputs accordingly, you can perform the ultra shortcut 3 times and complete the race. The first time, you tilt back (i.e. taildive) and get rejected from the wall near the last KCP. This lets you rotate fully (using the third mushroom to stick to the wall) such that you enter lap 2 as you get rejected from the wall yet again. The second time, you tilt forward (i.e. nosedive) to stick to the wall, and tilt back again to be rejected from the wall near the last KCP. Without a mushroom, you are sent towards the finish line banner, which rejects you back towards the last KCP again, while you are still facing towards the finish line. This results in a fast rejection from the wall near the last KCP sending you directly to the finish line.

Unrestricted Flap

The current strategy for the UR flap is to perform the ultra shortcut. The principle is the same as the UR 3lap, and you can change vertical inputs in just the right way to set up the perfect sequence of wall bonks; most importantly a fast rejection from the wall near the last KCP. For simplicity, to get onto the wall, the wall ride shortcut from NU 3lap/flap is used instead.

No Ultra 3lap

The current strategy for the NU 3lap is to perform various wall ride shortcuts. On lap 1, the first mushroom is used to bounce off the mushroom at the beginning, locking you at 100 IV. Following this, you wall ride over the fence twice to hit KCP 2, and continue wall riding along the rock wall left until you reach the cliff face. From here, you continue wall riding further to the right, until the correct pitch relative to the wall causes you to begin climbing the cliff. Upon clearing the top, you must navigate mid-air to hit KCP 3, before landing on a mushroom in the cave. Here, the second mushroom is used to propel yourself sideways, aiding in converting the EV gained from falling into the cave to sideways momentum. Trick boost is used to skip directly across to one of the lower mushrooms near the end of the cave. Before bouncing, the third mushroom is used, locking you once again at 100 IV. However, this bounce is low enough that you can bounce off a second mushroom with the speed lock retained. This is where you can hop and begin the indefinite rotation to perform another wall ride on the last turn. On laps 2 and 3 there are no mushrooms left to use, so shortcuts are now limited. By taking the left path in the cave, and bouncing off the very edge of the final mushroom, the last turn wall ride shortcut can be done shroomless. For a full explanation of this portion of the TAS, see the NG 3lap section, as these laps are not very optimized and miss out several strategies.

No Ultra Flap

The current strategy for NU flap is to perform various wall ride shortcuts. The first lap of the NU 3lap is the current NU flap.

No Glitch 3lap

Video: 1:36.262 by SwareJonge (2021)

The current strategy for NG 3lap is to drive 3 laps normally, performing various small skips. You can perform the beginning shortcut shroomless by hopping over the offroad strip, bouncing off the first mushroom regularly, and then bouncing off the second mushroom on its edge. By doing this, you can get mushroom abuse, which lets your IV exceed the usual 73 or 100 speed lock. Mushroom abuse is used wherever possible. After this shortcut, you can skip the 73 IV lock induced by the ramp by hopping off the road to the right of it. At the split path, you can trick off the first mushroom, and then get a RFH ejection to switch paths and land on the boost panel. In the cave, you can hop over the ramp at the start to avoid its 73 IV lock, and then near the end you can skip one of the mushrooms by bouncing off the very edge for increased height. On the last turn, you can use the first mushroom to jump across the gap, using a wallclip to hug the corner tighter. A miniturbo is charged during the mushroom boost, which is released when the boost runs out, helping align for the beginning shortcut. The same strategies are used on laps 2 and 3, with the second and third mushrooms being used at the "gap jump" shortcut once again.

No Glitch Flap

Video: 30.073 by Jellopuff and LuigiM (2020)

TAS Competitions

Mushroom Gorge has featured in one of the MKCinema Challenges open to TASing (#9) and five tasks of the MKWii TAS Competition (Task 10 2020, Task 18 2020, Task 8 2021, Task 18 2021, and Special Task VII).

Future

Known timesaves

UR 3lap

  • By bonking onto the wall below the bouncy part of the first mushroom, you can enter a BR state, then upon bouncing you hop, which sends you backwards. Using a mushroom during the BR, you can propel yourself onto the mountain wall with the 100 IV lock, saving over a second.
  • You can ride the mountain wall more efficiently by performing the taildive rejection from lap 1 shroomless on all 3 laps. This lets you use an additional mushroom when approaching the BR strat.

NU 3lap

  • Performing the "cliff climb" shortcut on all three laps would save multiple seconds.
  • Performing the last turn "wall ride" shortcut with the trick boost mushroom skip strategy is a good amount faster than bouncing over the top.[1]

NU Flap

  • Performing a DLC to begin the lap in front of the finish line.
  • Tricking off two mushrooms upon landing in the cave after the "cliff climb" shortcut has been shown to be faster.[2]

NG 3lap

  • Faster start slide exists than the one used in the current TAS
  • More optimization has been done at the beginning of lap 1, and can similarly be done in the rest of the TAS.

NG Flap

  • Using EV gained from simply drifting into the air with an ODB, you can carry sideways momentum throughout the cave, making ODB faster. This is allowed in No Glitch TASes as it is a purely natural ODB mechanic, unlike something like superhopping.

Potential timesaves

UR 3lap

  • Thomas claims Sugarscoot has the fastest movement on the wall of any bike. This has not been confirmed, so all work towards the BR strat has been done with Mach Bike.
  • Using Mini Beast to rotate on the wall significantly faster than any bikes has not been tested, so it is not known whether it saves more than you would lose from not doing the BR strat, or if it saves any time at all.

NU 3lap

  • Using ODB is not confirmed faster for NU 3lap, though is suspected to be.

NU Flap

  • Using ODB is not confirmed faster for NU flap either, though is also suspected to be.
  • By performing a DLC and then going back onto the wall, you can enter the lap in a trick boost to prevent having to accelerate from 0. However, doing the wallride in this way currently either forces you to accelerate from having backwards momentum (i.e. worse than starting at 0) or enter the lap on the wall (i.e. defeating the point of performing the delayed lap count).

NG 3lap

  • If the ODB drifting momentum strategy can be performed efficiently enough, it could be faster in a 3lap environment.
